Every day, millions of people in many cities around the world use public transit but have no idea what goes on behind the scenes. Most people who do have an understanding don’t realize that among professionals and outsiders alike, there are people who take interest in transportation, to a point where they are almost obsessed. This series will be devoted to taking some of the terms used by industry professionals who happen to be fans and those who are just fans and friends of fans of the industry. Basically, what it means to “railfan” or why some buses “short turn” instead of doing the full route. I shall try to explain it in laments terms and apply it to what I know or have experienced in the nearly 3 decades of either working or being a fan of the transportation industry. Please don’t hesitate to chime in or offer suggestions.
